McBride Charles Ryan is a practice that evolved
from a studio-base formed by architectural
graduates in Melbourne in the early 1990s. The
firm is located in Melbourne, Australia and its
owners are Robert McBride and Debbie Ryan. Early works were primarily small
residential commissions. McBride Charles Ryan still maintains an interest in the
architectural possibilities of the private home but the office has gone on to work
on significant institutional and large commercial projects.
Buildings by McBride Charles Ryan have received extensive publication in the
nation’s major architectural journals and the directors are regularly invited by
the profession to lecture locally and internationally on subjects ranging from
their own work to housing policy and urban sustainability. The firm’s largest
executed project to date, the QV2 apartment complex, was exhibited in 2006
at the Venice Architectural Biennale. With awards across all major architectural
categories, McBride Charles Ryan has demonstrated an uncanny versatility in
providing excellent architecture in many different and varied fields. The work is
both cerebral and tactile. It responds to local concerns and yet the experimental
nature of the work and the boldness of the form & expression have also
attracted a growing international audience. In 2005 McBride Charles Ryan
won the state of Victoria’s top architectural prize, “The Victorian Medal” with a
suburban educational facility—Templestowe Park Primary School. While at the
World Architecture Festival 2009 the Klein Bottle House won “World’s Best
House”.
