B + W architecture, Ueli Brauen + Doris Wälchli
Brauen + Wälchli’s architecture expresses the insistent quest for a sober functionality which, while obeying utilitarian and practical imperatives, is fundamentally different in nature, satisfying altogether different aspirations. As in a fabric, where the interweaving of warp and weft threads recedes into the background, making way for something else, it is the substance of exchange ― a substance by definition invisible, non-material ― that the architects sustain in their expanded dialogue with the various parties involved in a project. Continuity of design is a defining characteristic of their work: themes, motifs and forms are linked or inverted ― with no apparent interruption ― from one design or completed project to the next. Their “work in progress” unfurls a continuous thread of thought, visible on the surface or running underground, from one work to the next, as original impulse leads to completion ― or to a new point of departure.
