Wayfinding system for Manufaktura, a former Textile factory transformed into a 36 hectare shopping and leisure destination with over 50 restaurants, cafes and bars as well as multiplex cinema, sports centres, museums, hotel, night clubs and over 300 stores.
Rather than limiting wayfinding and navigation tools to two-dimensional graphics, design revisits the modern art traditions of Łódz. A series of furniture pieces signal directions to landmarks in the development, yet also encourage visitors to enjoy them in a number of ways. The cast concrete ‘signs’ capped in boldly coloured powder-coated l have proved popular with people who use them to rest on or socialise, play and watch the world go by.
In addition to concrete letters, there is a flexible system of vertical pointers, used in different configurations and grouped in colourful clusters across the space. The colour of each post corresponds to the colour of the building on the directory plan with Polish used as the main language and English secondary. The vertical pointers are used in 5 sizes which reflect the distance between the viewer and the signposted location. Pointers increase in size as they get closer to the building or entrance, giving a visual representation of distance. The different heights create a playful variation and aesthetic.
The project has received a prestigious ICSC award for the “Best New Very Large Center”
