Wayfinding & Environmental graphics for the new branch of the Guang Dong Museum of Art designed by distinguished architect Rem Koolhaas (O.M.A).
Dutch typographic designer Nivard Thoes created a tailor-made bilingual typeface for English and Chinese lettering, designed with stencil features for sign-panels and interior graphics applied directly on concrete walls and flooring for a total space of 28,000 square meters.
The conceptual approach was inspired by the architects original intention of creating a 'printed museum' merging graphics into it's interior. To achieve the fusion of 2 dimensional elements into space the signage was developed as a second skin, directly applying lettering on the interior surface. The industrial style way-finding approach was combined with secondary wall mounted sign-panels made of stainless steel with laser-cut lettering.
