Kwa Mai Mai is a place where one can find any Zulu traditional regalia in Johannesburg; one is able to meet Sangomas (Traditional healers) who use real animal parts to cure sicknesses. The logo concept of the Kwa Mai Mai is derived from the African wooden masks; the shape also echoes a fingerprint, creating a suggesting that each Sangoma is different from another because of different ancestral spirits (Zulu: Amadlozi). The shapes, dots and the colour are all ed to native South African tribes.
The visual language is inspired by Southern African patterns. The visual language is designed in a way, which gives honour to the African tribes. The visual language has a “sense of place”, and it enhances the place’s visual appeal and identity, and ultimately making Kwa Mai Mai more memorable to residents and visitors. The visual language also reassures and encourages exploration/ wandering and discovery hence making people can engage with the place.
