This spectacular apartment has a central London location and is ideally positioned in London’s cultural scene at the South Bank. The views from both levels of the apartment are truly magnificent, taking in initially the hustle and bustle of Waterloo Station and the roundabout at the Imax cinema and then greater London and beyond.
When first visiting the apartment it immediately became apparent that the existing design and layout was dated and in need of desperate modernization. Once the surveys and feasibility studies had been completed we considered and presented the Client with the following proposals:
• Minimize the wastage of space and ensure all spaces are functional and useable. Considering the cost per square foot in London this was a high priority.
• Create more comfortable bedrooms with built in wardrobes and larger and more user friendly bathrooms
• Skilfully the upper and lower level with a staircase that has the wow factor
• Create a void between the upper and lower level at the window wall to enhance the feeling of spaciousness and create more light to the lower level
• Create an open plan kitchen, dining, living and study area with spaces for comfortable living and entertaining
Once these options had been considered further attention was given to the architectural finishes, fittings, joinery and soft furnishing. In order to achieve the brief from the Client that the apartment should be contemporary in design but equally comfortable and luxurious we considered and implemented natural lime stone flooring on both upper and lower levels. The walls were decorated in a neutral white, the kitchen fronts were constructed of glass in a warm natural tone and the joinery in a contrasting dark timber finish. The contemporary Italian sofa with Giorgetti armchair and foot stool sit on a Deidre Dyson area rug and this is all complimented with the Clients own hammered bronze coffee table imported from Morocco.
Both bedrooms are similarly finished with silver grey silk carpets and bespoke wardrobes. The master bathroom has a luxurious walk in shower with rain sky fittings and the guest bathroom has both a double ended bath and shower all finished in a fine black basalt stone.
A fully integrated home automation system was installed which allowed complete flexibility and control of both the audio visual and lighting.
The design statement in this apartment is the spiral staircase as it is the ing element between the 2 levels and is centred on the open plan space of the lower level. It was crucial that when arriving at the lower level one is facing the window wall with a view over London. The staircase is constructed of polished chrome and opaque glass. The opaque glass and polished chrome staircase is self supporting and so free of the surrounding wall which was subsequently shaped to follow the line of the spiral staircase as it flows from the upper to the lower level. The circular handrail is also constructed of chrome and sensitively detailed to not deter from the clean lines of this amazing staircase.
As a second home the Client has expressed his satisfaction that the apartment meets all his needs in terms of having a London which is simple and easy to maintain, a place to relax after a busy day in London and importantly a place to entertain in a chic contemporary environment.
